About my Big Toe!

OK, so there I was, excited about going sailing. I drive over to where I keep my boat. Parked and start to pull my trailer out to the jeep. As I am pulling the trailer out, I pull the front wheel right over my big toe! I look down and see - My toe nail gone, a big hole with what looks like gore just oozing out.. Yuk. OK, big problem. I hate the sight of blood. Having stitches makes me pass out. So, my thought is, with losing this much blood, will I pass out? Go into shock? etc. There is no one around in the parking area and not likely to be too many coming in today. So, I push the trailer back, jump in the car and head over to the house. (I now realize that I am really not in that much pain - good thing!).
Get there, enter and call out for my wife. She does not hear as she is in the shower. So, I hobble upstairs, announce that I am going to urgent care, normal surprise and what happened, no time to chat as I am bleeding over the carpet. (I did put a paper towel around the toe as I entered, so I was bleeding over the paper towel to be accurate).
I go down to urgent care. The receptionist can not see my foot and wants me to fill out a bunch of paperwork! I try to help her understand the bleeding and mess on the carpet etc. Still no luck, so I have to raise my foot so she can see the issue. Good, now I am taken straight back to a room. Doctor comes in, Hmmn not good. Looks like an open fracture and they can not take care of it there. Marjorie comes in as the doctor is trying to figure out what to do. I conveniently pass-out so I do not have to worry! I wake up with oxygen mask on and the doctor saying that they have called 911. The paramedics arrive - Seems like they only accept young, good looking guy's. All the girls are enjoying the show, Marjorie is unhappy that she is not wearing make up! he-he. :) The paramedics get me stable and offer a ride to the emergency room. OK the "no drama" gene kicks in and I ask Marjorie to take me in the car...
Check into the emergency and finally get to the room to see the doctor. The look on his face is not good. He immediately starts talking about surgery. Here I was thinking that a clean up and a few stitches and I would be on my way! No such luck. Xrays taken confirm toe broken in three places. Still have the nasty cut to deal with. Lots of dirt in the wound concerns everyone. The emergency room doctor calls the specialist and then starts to try and clean the wound, while giving me assorted injections and some kind of drip. (I found out latter that one of the injections cost $100! wow). The specialist doctor arrives. Nice young lady, inspects the wound and confirms I will need to go to surgery so she can clean the wound correctly and stitch it up.
OK, I feel better about that so I do not have to watch, feel the pain of the cleaning and stitches. Yes, I am a wimp. I know, it is just how I am. I have to wait a while as I drank coffee with cream and they do not want to give me a general until I have digested the milk. Knowing It would be a couple of hours until the surgery, I had suggested to Marjorie that she keeps her hair cut appointment then come back.Wait a couple of hours and they wheel me in. Knock me out and I wake up later in recovery. Bandage on my toe and the nurse telling me everything went well. Good, that means I still have my toe... The emergency room doctor thought that the toe may need to be amputated.. Marjorie arrives looking great in with her hair done nice. Time to hobble out and go home. Enough drama for one day!
So it's a few week latter now and the bills arrived. The cost for my day in the hospital is right around $20,000. Good job my insurance is picking up the vast majority of these charges. Still, going over the charges I now find some silly, (to me), charges I will need to contest.
The toe is healing nicely.  Still not sure if the toe nail will grow back, ever. But the wound is healing well. The specialist did a great job stitching it back up so no hole, just a nice looking cut type scar probably!
So, here it is about a year and a half latter. I did have the nail grow back, it then came off and grew again. The wound has mended nicely. Must be good genes! It is hard to even see where the cut was. It definitely does not look like the kind of wound recovery where the toe was almost cut in two!

Been off line a while

OK I have not been on line in a while to update the blog. A couple of issues, 1) I ran over my big toe as I pulled the boat trailer out and cut/broke the toe. 2) My computer stopped working. So now I have a new computer I will catch up on the postings.

Big waves and little wind. Jan 25th, 2104

Fun waves. Storm surge brought swells of 6' plus. Traveled approx 10 Nmiles in light winds. Out a little over 4 hours.
Big waves coming into the mouth of the harbor today. My little 2hp Honda had trouble powering over them. I also caught a little seaweed on the prop that caused me some excitement. Right in the middle between the breakwaters, big waves and reduced power lol. Always happens at the worst times! This video is from a distance after I had motored out a safe distance. You can still see the harbor police playing in the surf with their boat.

No wind.....

Hooked up the boat, Sunday. Took it down to Oceanside. There was no wind at all. I hung around a couple of hours chatting with other boat people and generally enjoying the time at the ramp. Still no wind, so headed back home. A perfect day at the beach!

1st sail of new year. Jan 5th, 2014

Good sail out of Oceanside. Weather man called for 5mph winds and one foot seas. Well, he was wrong. Ended up with good wind and fun swells.
Top speed of 6.2 knots. Ave speed of 3.4 knots. 14 Nmiles. Out for a little over four hours.

Two fun videos of the sail. One is going down wind with a following sea. Good practice for me. I ended up just securing the jib in neutral, rather than trying for wing on wing. With the following sea, the jib was being bounced from side to side and was annoying me. No apparent loss in speed once I went with just Mizzen and main.
The second video is of the fun waves as I beat back up wind to the marina. No ballast, so the boat was just bouncing and crashing through the waves. A fun part of the sail. As always, the waves look smaller on the video :)

Down wind with following sea video.

Bumpy sea video. You can see I am feathering into the wind to keep the speed around 4.5/5knots. I also noticed on the video that I have the foot of the sail to tight. Result being it pulled my second string of perele beads loose from the mast. No danger of losing them as I had beads on both side of the sail to keep the string secure. I learned that after losing one of my first strands in a good chop out of Chula Vista last year!

December 21st, 2013 Sail out of Oceanside.

OK. This will be my final sail for this year. I was able to get out for a few hours Saturday, 21/12/13.  :D Great sail out of Oceanside, California. Wind a steady 9mph with gusts to 20mph. No ballast or reef. Just about on the edge of this. If the wind filled in I was going to reef. Swells were at 6 feet with the sets coming at 11 second intervals. Great surfing waves. A little rough, as you can see. I still have yet to ship any water in the BayRaider! I did have a situation where I was a little late spilling the wind while crossing the downside of a wave, went over pretty well but still no water. Got to love these BayRaiders.

Nice video of the sail.

November 30th, 2013. Mission Bay with the Potters

Time: 3:22:23
Moving Time: 2:46:57
Elapsed Time: 3:22:23
Avg Speed: 2.9 mph
Avg Moving Speed: 3.5 mph
Max Speed: 6.7 mph

Fun weekend with the Potters. I was planning on sailing Friday and Saturday. Rain on Friday morning put that day off. I went for dinner with the group at the Mission Bay Yacht club. Saturday was sun and wind. Picked up to about 9 knots with gusts over 15.
I had a fun incident as I sailed up to the dock and the club, the wind blew me off the dock and I tried to jump. Well, I should have stayed on the boat! I fell in the water. I could not pull my self over the side. So, I slid around to the stern and used the rudder step to climb onto the boat. The rudder step worked well, but not really the way I wanted to find this out. The wind continued to push the boat out and it was good I chose to stay with the boat, rather than holding onto the dock. I sailed out a little then came back in. A person saw me go in and came down to help. He held the bow for me this time so no more drama. I was soaked up to my chest.  Ken, from International marine came out with me for a while. Nice for him to see the boats performance as I am trying to get him to build the boats out here.
 Nice sail today.
